It’s almost the end of Cup Week… and I am exhausted.
Yet I haven’t attended one race day.
Because amongst the mixed messaging about gambling and alcohol (which could be the subject of more than one master’s thesis), there has been an onslaught of commentary about what women wear.
The takedown?
That dress is…
Too tight.
Too small.
Too revealing.
Too short.
Too inappropriate.
Journalists trawling social media comments from anonymous, unqualified voices to bolster their “observations” — and objectifications.
Yes, there has been one article protesting this degrading practice of “fashion” analysis.
(Notably from the platform that has been the biggest culprit!)
Yes, it is usually celebrities featured in the stories, those with the means to flaunt it.
But when we say it is okay for one group, it becomes common practice for all.
One of my most hated expressions is: “look what she is wearing” followed by “she was asking for it.”
So let’s stop looking with a shallow eye, and enable this thinking to become as antiquated as it should be.
