Why Your Reputation Still Matters

You’ve worked hard to get where you are.

Time and effort put into qualifications, growth through personal development and optimised wellbeing.

You’ve delivered results and maybe, an award or recognition along the way.

But are you there yet?

Here’s the reality. Your reputation isn’t built on your biggest wins alone. It’s the small, everyday moments that shape how others see you.

A single interaction, whether positive or negative, can leave a lasting impression.

Unfortunately, a misstep can overshadow years of dedication and hard work. Think about the moments when you lost trust in someone.

Some of the most common pitfalls that can damage a personal or team’s reputation include:

โŒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† โ€“ if people can’t trust you will do as you say, they wonโ€™t believe you. It’s a no-brainer.

โŒ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ โ€“ failing to follow is a game-changer, even if your intentions were good.

โŒ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† โ€“ pessimism and cynicism are dealbreakers, and reflect poorly on your leadership.

โŒ ๐—š๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฝ โ€“ speaking negatively makes people wonder what you say about them.

โŒ ๐—”๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† โ€“ a lack of accountability is just immature. End of.

โŒ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ณ-๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น โ€“ outbursts quickly erode the confidence others place in you.

The truth is, we all have moments when we falter – even you.

Leaders with empathy acknowledge their errors and move forward with everyday actions to build trust, respect and professionalism.

One of my all-time favourite CEOs walked the floor, maybe not every day, but often enough to notice. She remembered the names of family members and asked about them.

She remembered who liked baking and who liked watching movies. She smiled and waved to people who preferred to stick to themselves.

Even if it was a super short conversation, you basked in the warmth of a genuine connection.

Talking to a person, not a God-like deity, made attending the next executive meeting so much easier.

So, how do you ensure that your reputation aligns with the leader you aspire to be? It starts with self-awareness, accountability and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Your reputation matters. Make sure it works for you.
