Scared of AI? Let’s reframe that fear

Were you scared of the dark when you were eight? Did you believe monsters were lurking in the closet or under the bed?

That’s how many people sound to me when they talk about AI. Convinced AI is nothing more than another scary monster.

Like that eight-year-old still trying to grasp their world, these concerns aren’t entirely unfounded.

AI is a powerful force, still in its infancy and not fully realised or monetised. But it will be.

Like any new technology, AI has positives and negatives, depending on your perspective. So, let’s turn on a light, here’s how to turn those scary monsters into friendly allies:

  • Acknowledge the Positives: fraud prevention, online shopping, digital mapping, home automation, and advanced vehicle safety systems. All good, right?

  • Use with Caution: be mindful not to share personal identity like names or addresses in prompts. The US’s National Cybersecurity Alliance suggest ways to protect yourself and especially, children. Be careful what you share online, use your privacy settings and watermark photos, adopt multi-factor identification, and always have a unique password. A cyber security breach — especially if you are an entity that holds a client’s personal information — is one of the foremost risks to your business, reputation, and trust. In Australia, scams are identified via the Federal Government’s Scamwatch page or check out your state’s police website.

  • Practice with Glee: plan your dream holiday! Use descriptive words in your prompts for the best results – e.g. “a family of four interested in arts and culture traveling to New York for a week.” Ask several questions about flights, hotels or activities to put together the ultimate experience. Try words like “define,” “summarise” or “list”. Rephrase or regenerate if you don’t like the response; continue to ask for specifics or comparisons.

Sidenote: when you have got your ultimate holiday plan, print out and add to your aspiration wall…

it’s a great motivation tool!

Bonus: Trip Advisor also now allows for AI prompts, yay!!

  • Human Intervention is a Must: avoid simply pressing “control C” and “control V” (in other words, don’t copy and paste; you can tell if it’s AI generated text). Review the text for grammar, sentiment, and meaning, and then edit accordingly. Remember, US English often takes precedence over Australian English.

Embrace AI with a balanced approach, and it can be a powerful tool for inspiration rather than a source of fear.
