We have high expectations for our leaders, rightly so, but there’s also personal accountability.
Avoid being disempowered and disappointed by choosing the wrong person to work with. Our senior execs are an “it” factor that too often gets overlooked.
When considering a new role, you might need a greater challenge, convenient location or financial incentive.
You also need a good boss!
Because you’re not just picking a job, you’re picking a guide for your career.
Pick the wrong one, it can impact your day-to-day job satisfaction, performance and mental health.
In 2025, an inspiring leader is a must-have – look for empathy, expertise, knowledge and ability to encourage you to be your best.
How?
It’s often asked in an interview, what do you really need from your leader? Take the time to ask yourself and get specific.
Do you:
🤔Thrive under structure or prefer autonomy?
🤔Get inspired by charisma or quiet demonstrations of expertise?
🤔Like a sounding board or empowerment from a distance?
Answer these questions honestly.
Then do your homework. Because your next boss certainly will.
Flip the standard practice and reference check them, not just the organisation.
Use LinkedIn to ask former employees about your prospective bosses’ management style, how they collaborate and handle challenges?
Glassdoor reviews may also offer insights, I have been known more than once to Google for videos of any public speaking gigs.
This is your career. You deserve to find the person who will show you respect and empathy, and role model the leadership you have earned.
