If you are Australian, like me, congrats! You were born in a safe, wealthy country; you hit the genetic jackpot.
So, why are so many angry at those who weren’t as lucky and just want what you already have?
Yes, generations before us might have made good choices, but we didn’t. We got lucky. Wouldn’t you do everything you could to keep your family safe?
Now, I know some people will say “we can’t take everyone.” True, no country can open its borders without limits. But limits don’t mean a lack of compassion. Policies can balance resources and humanity, just as many nations already do.
Others might say “they should come legally.” I agree. But when the legal path is blocked or takes decades, people facing danger don’t have the luxury of waiting. History shows that when safety is at stake, humans will move first and seek permission later (including many of our own families).
And finally, “large-scale migration changes our culture.” Yep. And culture always changes. That’s how it stays alive. Australia’s identity is the product of countless migrations from post-war arrivals to today’s diverse communities.
Nationality isn’t an achievement. It’s luck. And when you’re lucky, you have a choice – you can use your luck to build walls… or open doors.
