From “Non-Techie” to AI Advocate

My husband (an IT expert) once joked I’d use a CD-ROM as a drink holder. Even my 10-year-old beats me to mastering the TV remote.

So how did I end up running AI workshops?

My curiosity was sparked by Adam Spencer, the math-loving comedian, who helped me see AI not as a threat but as a tool. Despite my tech fears, I’ve embraced AI.

And now I help communicators do the same. At first, AI felt like the monster under the bed – powerful, mysterious and a little bit scary.

The fear is real: job loss, misinformation, data privacy, environmental impact.

But here’s the thing: AI doesn’t have emotions. It’s not a Terminator. It’s a tool and it’s here to stay.

So, I got to work to understand AI’s risks and responsibilities and how to use AI to boost – not reduce – creativity.

I can now happily apply copywriting frameworks; adapt content for multiple channels (and I now manage too many daily!) and am fascinated by the emerging tools (yes, even grief tech).

Let’s stop fearing the dark. Let’s turn on the light. Let’s use AI ethically and effectively.

AI is not here to replace us. It might replace tasks and used “writely,” it can help us to do better, smarter work – faster!
