Will we choose ideas over soundbites

Watching the vote count for the by-elections for two Victorian seats got me thinking about political communication.

Especially as, in 2025, we’ll have a Federal Election and some remarkable electorate changes.

It is being reported that, for the first time, Gen Z and Millennials will outnumber Boomers in every state and territory.

This is a seismic change in how political parties campaign, how policies are shaped and ultimately, how our country is governed and it is opportunity to improve how we communicate and influence each other.

Will we vote based on ideas and policies that shape the future or will we be swayed by soundbites, clickbait, outrage and populism?

Politics, sadly, has become increasingly driven by engagement metrics rather than meaningful debate.

It is challenging to reconcile viral moments, attack ads, virtue signalling and divisive headlines as genuine consideration of concerns and ideals.

But I would love to see our feeds filled by complex issues explained in a simple and meaningful way. Because elections have real consequences for real people.
