History – watching or reading documentaries – is a favourite pastime in our household. Yes, we are nerds.
We love that it allows us to time travel and explore the lives and decisions of those who shaped this world (inspired by Indiana Jones much?).
I particularly love the stories about women—leaders, warriors, inventors and artists. My all-time favourite is Cleopatra VII. What an incredible life.
But I am also greatly fascinated by the lives of women much closer to me – our grandmothers and great-grandmothers. A source of inspiration, even if it is unlikely that a historical novel will be written about them.
My husband’s grandmother—whom I have come to love as my own—just celebrated her 99th birthday. Her unwavering dedication to her family and resilience are examples of character that I genuinely admire.
She proves that you don’t have to be famous to have an impact.
Learning about remarkable women – past and present – prompts me to ask. What stories will future generations know about us?
As we go through our day, do we ask ourselves enough what of our decisions — in our careers, communities and personal lives — will be remembered?
Will we be an inspiration or a lesson to observe? It is a simple challenge but one to ponder beyond the now.
