Au revoir, Paris Olympics

When the alarm went off at 5am, and my family snuck downstairs to watch the closing ceremony, I was reminded of the profound impact this event has had.

Despite not being particularly sports-minded, I can admire this exhibition of endurance, inspiration and athleticism. So many iconic moments were captured, from the surf to the stadium.

Three examples of spectacular leadership stood out to me.

Tokyo Olympics (2020) 2021 brought me to tears watching US gymnast Simone Biles withdraw from competition, putting her own mental health first. This act of self-care was the epitome of bravery to me. She has now been described in the news as having the “comeback of all comebacks.” I couldn’t agree more.

Australian BMX star Saya Sakakibara is another name we remembered from 2021. The image of her crashing and being stretchered off the course was etched in our minds. Sakakibara triumphed over this adversity and, in another incredible comeback, won her first gold medal.

Anna Meares, chef de mission of the Australian Olympic Team, has had a remarkable career. She not only got back on the bike after a brutal accident but also became an Australian flagbearer and Olympic medallist. When she choked up during a media conference in her current role, I saw the depth of commitment to her role and care.

As a leader, whether you are an appointed leader or an informal person of influence, your actions and decisions make a difference. Leadership will test you.

You can be tested mentally, physically or a combination of both.

In these moments, you can demonstrate what it means to take a stand. True leaders will fail, make mistakes and be discouraged… but still demonstrate bravery, resilience, commitment and care

You can’t always prevent or protect yourself from disappointment – despite your training, strength and determination. But like these three amazing women, you can brush yourself off.

You can get back up and try again. You can choose to be the leader who shapes a positive work environment and inspires others to do the same.
