One month ago…

As someone privileged to enjoy their career, the idea of winning the lottery and an early retirement never appealed to me.

Nor did I want to stay in any organisation past my used-by date.

Deciding to open my own business wasn’t easy, it was a risk but one month into consulting, I am grateful for the opportunity.

There are some challenges to being your own boss, despite the advertising, it’s not all long lunches and early finishes.

It is, however, a rewarding growth experience and mindset makes all the difference.

Here’s what I know already:

  • You need a voice: representing others means being respectful of their position. You now need your own. On every detail, action and decision.
  • You won’t be “perfect”: constant editing and rewriting in a bid for perfection isn’t a win. Better to strive for excellence and meet that deadline.
  • You “work” crazy hours: creativity doesn’t seem to have an “off” switch and inspiration will strike at inopportune moments (like when you are supposed to be sleeping). You also work long days because you forget you’re actually working. Either manage it or burn out.
  • You find time for you: the guilt doesn’t evaporate immediately: it does lessen as you transition when working your own hours. In the last month or so, I have returned to volunteer work, the gym and the dance studio. All pursuits I previously enjoyed but surrendered trying to achieve work-life balance when working in-house.
  • You feel vulnerable: it’s uncomfortable when you realise you don’t know everything. But you also don’t need to. Focus on what you do know, seek out advice or learn the other stuff.
  • You genuinely appreciate significant others for their support: I refer to mine as the “silent partner.” We hold fortnightly team meetings so I can debrief. He’s not actively involved but he is there to catch me if I wobble.
  • You meet smart people who are incredibly generous: it’s been unexpected and overwhelming; every conversation adds fuel to the tank. Having benefited from their insights, feedback and support, my next step is paying it forward.

A big thanks to everyone who has motivated and inspired me.
